Cape May’s Spring Break: What to see and where to be!

After a relatively mild winter here in Cape May, spring has arrived! For many reasons, the excitement around town is palpable. First of all, spring especially shines here in Cape May due to the multitude of trees and flowers that are suddenly in bloom. As Cape Island was once part of the mainland, we enjoy a natural beauty that various other Jersey Shore towns are simply not accustomed to. The spring landscape coupled with the backdrop of Cape May’s gorgeous beaches is a truly spectacular site, and we hope you will be able to enjoy it! A specific reason to visit Cape May in the spring is certainly not required…but if you’re looking for a bit of direction as to where to go and what to see, here’s a sampling of what will be taking place over the next few weeks…

-Saturday, April 8th: The Cape May Film Festival presents their first retrospective event! Special guests will be featured, as well as the best films of the past 15 years. Session times are 12-4 pm and 6-9 pm at the West Cape May Borough Hall.

-Spring Break at Congress Hall will be taking place from Monday, April 10th though Friday, April 21st, 2017. This event has been cultivated with the entire family in mind! Events will include train rides on the Congress Hall Express, family yoga, paint and create, and an Easter Egg Hunt…just to name a few! (Limited seating available for certain events, so be sure to reserve early for the activities of your choice).

-Saturday, April 15th is the 18th Annual Polar Bear and Pup Plunge! This event is open to the public and will be located just off of Cape Island at the Beachcomber Campground. Event proceeds will assist in benefiting the Cape May County Animal Shelter. If you’re coming to Cape May over spring break, make a reservation at one of our pet friendly rentals! You then have no excuse not to enter your own four legged friend into the Pup Plunge.

-Also on Saturday, April 15th, the Kiwanis Club of Cape May will present its annual Easter Egg Hunt. There will even be an opportunity for the little ones to meet the Easter Bunny! The event will be located in the Lafayette Street Park (just next to Cape May City Elementary School).

-Easter Sunday (April 16th): Rise early and enjoy an Easter Sunrise Service at The Cove Beach. Service will begin at 6:30 am and culminate at approximately 7:00 am. The multiple churches of Cape May will of course be offering Easter worship services as well. We recommend visiting the website of your church of choice, or contacting them via phone for the most up to date service times.

-Begin your Easter afternoon by having fun on the Washington Street Mall with the annual Easter Fashion Stroll! The stroll will be located at the 300 block of the mall, between Jackson and Perry Streets. Take part in the stroll or simply stand back and enjoy the fashions. It’s the perfect way to prepare for afternoon holiday dining and festivities.

Spring Break on the Cape!

Okay, we know it may sound a bit cliché, but spring has officially sprung! That’s right; for the past few weeks we at Homestead have been hinting at the excitement of the spring season…and it’s finally here. Cape May is fortunate to have been spared the wrath of a harsh winter. Nevertheless; winter is cold, gloomy, and at times a bit desolate by default. While that all may be a dream come true for the ultimate lover of tranquility, a majority of us have been anxiously awaiting the buzz of spring, especially the vibrant budding trees, stunning color of awakening perennials, and general buzz of activity in the air. Of course we also love the longer days that are perfect for evening strolls and stunning sunsets. Differing from the golden sun of the fall and winter, spring sunsets acquire a unique vibrancy that is not to be missed.

This year, an early Easter holiday means that spring break is suddenly upon us. Exhausted by winter cabin fever and often granted with additional time off, visitors traditionally flock to Cape May at this time. If you find yourself in town over the holiday break, there are some fantastic events awaiting the entire family. On Saturday, March 26th at 10:00 am, the Cape May Kiwanis Club will be hosting its annual Easter egg hunt at the Emlen Physick Estate. This event likely tempts the inner child in us all! However, it is reserved for children up to second grade level. All children will be excited to know that the hunt includes a chance to uncover a golden egg. As if that weren’t enough to excite the little ones, there is also a rumored Easter Bunny appearance!

The stroll will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. Of course you’re welcome to enjoy the stroll as a spectator, but much more fun can be had by arriving at noon and signing up to participate! There will even be prizes for best Easter bonnet and best dressed family. It’s the ideal event to attend before heading out for those much anticipated holiday meals and festivities.

If you will be dining in Cape May for Easter (or anytime!) please check out our area restaurants and locate cuisine tailored to all tastes and pocketbooks. As we enter the spring season you will find that most dining establishments are open, but not quite everyday just yet. The majority of restaurants will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday for about another month, so your options will be more limited during the early to mid-week. But if you’re in town Thursday through Sat/Sun, most locales are now open. As a general rule, this holds true for Cape May’s multitude of shopping destinations as well.
